As long as we are in the world we interface with the world. But how we interface has myriad faces. If we are awake we can sometimes determine our affect, creating real connection and giving these connections real meaning. But if we are asleep we are rather like the Magic 8 Ball not only surprising those we encounter but often surprising ourselves as well.
Being awake is a state of being only achieved with concerted effort. Without this effort we sedulously go about our lives as if awake but since all phenomena is illusion, immersing ourselves utterly in the material world is actually engaging in profound sleep.
The World Wide Web creates a unique opportunity for interface. It is both a vehicle for vast connection with countless others and a seducer into an illusion of connection because, behind the anonymity of this faceless interface, it is possible to end up more isolated than the kind of lonely only possible in a crowd. And yet it is a medium with such amazing reach with such endless possibilities and countless interactions that in the end it is recreating the whole meaning of interface.
